Videolaryngoscopy is a simple, high-clarity examination of the voice box using a thin rigid endoscope passed gently through the mouth. The camera gives a magnified view of your vocal cords, allowing accurate diagnosis of hoarseness, throat discomfort, reflux-related issues, vocal cord lesions, and many other conditions.
The test is quick, safe, and usually does not require any anesthesia.
The entire examination takes 1–2 minutes. With preparation and explanation, you’ll be done in under 5 minutes.
Not painful. You may feel a slight gag sensation initially, but most people tolerate it very well. It is far easier than expected.
Yes. This is a fully awake procedure. You can breathe, swallow, and communicate normally.
Yes. The camera projects a live image on a monitor, and I usually show patients their vocal cords in real time so they understand the problem clearly.
Absolutely. Since no sedation is used, you can drive immediately after the test.
Yes. There is no fasting required.
You can eat and drink normally before and after the examination.
Usually no medication is needed.
If you have a very sensitive throat or strong gag reflex, a mild throat spray may be used—this is optional.
You will feel it resting on your tongue, but it does not go down the throat. The sensation is mild and lasts only a few seconds.
Videolaryngoscopy is available at both my centres:
Lotus ENT Hospital, Ghatkopar
Entina ENT Clinic, Mahim
Both centres are equipped with modern high-resolution endoscopy systems to ensure accurate and comfortable diagnosis.
